New Zealand v England Third Test, Day Two Report Card
Featuring sleeping in and win-loss records
Sleeping In
Grade: D+
The day began with Will O’Rourke at the crease, being an utter nuisance to England. The day middled with Will O’Rourke at the crease, being an utter nuisance to England. And, by gum, it almost ended with Will O’Rourke at the crease, being an utter nuisance to England.
Yes, the second day of this Test was the day New Zealand wielded the Will O’ to put his side on top of this Test.
First, with the bat, he resumed with Mitchell Santner, the last pair batting for an entire hour of the morning’s play, after Ben Stokes’ attacking captaincy decided to have a sleep in, dozily putting the field back for five balls of each over and allowing Santner to slowly piece together another 26 runs to add to his overnight total of 50*.
It was only after the drinks break that England had any success, Matthew Potts going rogue and aiming one at Santner’s stumps.
A valuable lesson for Mitchell Santner: never hydrate.
